How to Repair Your Credit Without a Credit Repair Clinic

Joseph Feross asked:

This generation has turned into a microwave society. People want things done quickly, and repairing your credit is no exception. People get hyped up by guaranteed claims of repairing credit fast and easy. The truth is that is not the case. There are places called credit repair clinics that claim to be able to remove all negative information from your credit report. They also claim that your can credit can be wiped clean. Of course, there is a catch. You will have to pay a fee and it’s usually in the hundreds of dollars for their “services”.

Credit repair clinics are nothing more than a sham. You shouldn’t fall for them because they have no legal right to delete, repair or adjust your credit report. The only entity that can legally adjust or delete information is the credit bureau. Negative items, depending on what they are, can stay on your report for either seven (general negative information) or ten years (bankruptcy, i.e. Chapter 7). These so-called clinics have no legal right to remove these items from your credit report. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying in order to get your money. In fact, they really don’t do anything to help you improve your credit.

However, there is a way to do credit repair without you having to be scammed by these companies. You can repair your own credit. It’s good for you to do that so you’ll know what’s on your report and what each item posting is about. You will also learn different legal and cost-effective strategies that can be used to repair your credit. If you have quite a bit of debt, it may take some time to clean it up, unless you have a large lump sum to wipe it out.

Since you’ll be doing your own credit repair, Get a copy of your credit report and look at it thoroughly. If you find errors in it, make note of them. You will have to contact the credit bureaus and dispute the claims. By law, the bureaus must at least conduct and investigation to find out whether adjustments need to be made to your credit report. If they do find errors, they must be corrected. Or if they can’t verify the information, it must be deleted. If you wish, you can also send them a brief correspondence disputing the errors in your credit report.

Just think-if you were to allow a credit repair clinic to do this for you, do you know how your credit would end up? In addition to charging you hundreds of dollars to do what you can do yourself, they won’t tell you what you need to know about getting your credit straight. They’ll just take your money and run.

Credit repair clinics could care less about helping your to get your credit together. They’re just looking out for themselves to see how much they can get out of the deal. Some of them will actually use some of the same strategies that you would use to repair your credit.

This may sound like a lot to do, but it’s a far better credit repair strategy that paying hundreds of dollars to a company that claims they can erase your negative credit. When it’s all said and done, you will be glad that you chose to do it yourself.

5 Tips to Help Repair a Bad Credit Rating

Clint Jhonson asked:

While it may seem like there is little hope if you have a poor personal credit rating, there are steps that you can take to repair it. Working proactively to repair your credit will save you money over the long term as you will be in a better position to secure financing at attractive interest rates. While some individuals hire credit repair agencies to follow this process for them, others work through these tips to repair their credit on their own.

Follow these 5 tips to help repair a bad credit rating:

1-    Create a List and Organize Your Debts

The first thing to do when working on repairing your personal credit is to take a thorough inventory of all of your debts. Create a list of each consumer debt, the amount owed, the current interest rate and the minimum required monthly payment amount. You will need this information as you work through the remainder of the tips so even though it will take some time to become better organized, completing this step will save you money over the long term.

2-    Review your Current Credit Report

Be sure to request a copy of your current credit report from each credit agency for review. It is important to review reports from each reporting agency as they can each contain slightly different information and numerical scores. As you review each credit report, be sure to begin with checking your personal information. Is your name spelled correctly? Are there any versions of your name that have been listed on the report incorrectly? Review the listed addresses for accuracy. Then, review each credit account listed on the report to ensure that you in fact utilized credit from the company and that all related information is correct. Identity theft has become common so it is important to review each component, including the bad credit components to ensure that they are related to you personally. If there is something that has been reported incorrectly, report this finding immediately to the credit agency and to the company reporting the credit extended to you. If the information can be proven to be false, it will be removed from your credit report, therefore improving your score.

3-    Write Responses to the Credit Reporting Agencies

To elaborate on the process of managing facts and information that have been reported on your personal credit report incorrectly, the first step in the process is to create written responses. Create letters for each incorrect fact noticed and send them both to the credit reporting agency and to each individual reporting account. Continue to send letters until they respond or until the item has been corrected or removed from your report.

4-    Begin to Re-Build Credit

Once you have removed the negative items from your personal credit report, you will need to begin work on rebuilding your score. Start by using secured credit cards or personal loans. These credit lines extend small amounts of credit based upon you providing the capital that the credit lines are secured against. As you use the credit and repay on time, your credit score will be strengthened. And, once it has been strengthened enough, you will be able to apply for and secure unsecured credit lines. Be patient and work to conservatively build your credit over time.

5-    Learn to Use Credit Wisely

The last and probably most important step to take when rebuilding your credit is to learn how to use credit wisely. Consumers run into financial problems when they overextend themselves financially, they borrow too much for their personal incomes or they improperly use the credit that has been extended to them. Use only the credit that you need at the time of purchase or learn how to view credit as a way to leverage your current financial standing. Credit should not be used to purchase items that you cannot afford as over time, you will be placing yourself into a challenging financial situation. Also, learn to use credit for purchases such as homes, property and automobiles instead of just everyday consumer purchases. By learning to use credit wisely, it will be available when you are looking to make these wise financial purchases in the future.

Whether or not You Believe Credit Repair Works, You are Correct

Stuart Hunter asked:

There are few topics as polarizing as credit repair. Depending on who you talk to, credit repair is usually thought of as impossible, illegal, something you can only do yourself, or something you need professional help to perform. Rarely do you find someone with a perspective on credit repair that is not at the far end of one of these extremes.

The fascinating thing is that in most cases, whatever people believe to be true will be true for them.

The poster on the Yahoo! Answers forum who states that “there is NO SUCH thing as Credit Repair….it’s a scam….” will never realize any benefits from repairing their own credit. By believing that credit repair is impossible, they are fulfilling their own prophecy by ignoring their rights to dispute their own credit. By not believing it can be done, they are proving their own point. This person, and every other person who ignores the possibility of credit repair, will fall into the category of people whose credit scores will only improve through the passage of time.

The same is true of people who believe that credit repair companies do not work. Another poster on Yahoo! Answers stated that

“There is no such thing as repairing your credit through someone else. If they can, they are doing this via an illegal way and be extremely careful, as it can end YOU up in jail and fined.

The ONLY way to repair credit is to do it yourself.

Pay your bills on time ;o)”

Along with being misinformed about how the credit repair process works, this person is letting their flawed knowledge keep them from so much as investigating the possibility that a credit repair company may be able to help them out. Once again, in believing that it is impossible for a credit repair company to provide any value, this person has assured that they will never receive any value from a credit repair organization.

It is truly astounding how many people out there believe that credit repair cannot work and credit repair companies are nothing but scams. It is also unfortunate that it is these voices that seem to be the loudest because not only are they making credit repair an impossibility for themselves, but they are convincing so many other people to not even attempt to repair their own credit.

What is equally astounding is how these people can be so passionate about outing credit repair as a pipe dream and a scam when there are so many other people out there who are living proof that credit repair does in fact work. These are the people who have allowed for the possibility that their credit could be repaired and realized the truth about their credit reports.

It is hard to believe that anyone could completely dismiss the idea of credit repair when there are stories like this:

“I signed up for [credit repair firm] a couple of years ago. They basically write a couple of letters a month on your behalf to either businesses or credit reporting companies asking for verification of debt, that kind of thing, or if you instruct them, actually challenging the debt. After a few rounds of this, negative credit items start to fall off your report. You can totally do this yourself, but it’s been worth the cost to me (something like $40/month) since I am too lazy to regularly write this kind of letter. I also like how when the credit bureaus do bother to write back, they’re always pretty whiny and pissy about it.

Some people seem to think this is some kind of scam (like, paralegals write the letters on your behalf instead of attorneys, and some people don’t seem to understand that when you give an attorney “power of attorney,” they can write letters as you), but I think it’s a fair price for something I was too lazy to do myself. Ultimately, they pretty much got rid of all the negative items on my report except for the ones that were at least semi-legitimate. (I’m not going to pay a parking ticket I got five years ago in a state I’m not going back to.) The ones they did get rid of were things like AOL continuing to charge a credit card after a) I had cancelled the AOL account, and b) I had cancelled the credit card! It just wasn’t worth my time to chase this down with AOL or the credit card company.

It’s annoying that I’m responsible for fixing something that this bogus industry screws up in the first place, but other than that, I’m a happy “credit repair” customer.”

People who believe that credit repair is impossible will never see any benefit from it. People who believe that credit repair can only be done by themselves will only see the benefits of their personal efforts. People who believe that credit repair companies do not work will never invite the opportunity to have a credit repair company work for them.

Ultimately, when it comes to credit repair, we all create our own truths. All anybody can ask of you is to perform your own research instead of letting others choose your truths for you.
